Compatibility
Starlight can be installed either on the dedicated server or client. It is not required to be installed on both sides. If you have Starlight on the server, clients can use Vanilla/Phosphor/Starlight to connect. Likewise, if you have Starlight on the client, you can connect to Vanilla/Phosphor/Starlight servers.
Starlight cannot be installed with Phosphor, they are completely incompatible. Browsing through Starlight's Issue Tracker will show further mod incompatibilities. Starlight is a rather destructive light engine rewrite, so it should be expected to break mods more often.
Purpose
Starlight was developed for higher scale dedicated servers, as they suffered performance problems due to how ungodly slow the light engine was. The only solution was to create an extremely invasive mod which rewrote the entire light engine. I ported the mod to fabric so that I can update it during snapshots, and decided that publishing it for all users, especially client users, would be beneficial. However, it does have the downside of being an invasive mod: Being invasive didn't affect higher scale servers because they run on Bukkit.

Light engine time chunk generation Graph has been removed as a benchmark as it is invalid for 1.20. Starlight and Vanilla are close enough on 1.20 that this test is also useless.

Install Millida Launcher
The launcher is free: download it at millida.net/launcher and sign in with any nickname.
Click “Install” on this page
The launcher opens and installs the mod for Minecraft 1.18.2–1.20.1 on Forge automatically.
Launch the game
A profile with it appears in the launcher: click “Play”.
Manually
Install Forge
The loader must match the game version of the mod file, for example Minecraft 1.20.1. After installing it, a separate profile appears in your launcher.
Download the file for your version
In the version list above, pick the file starlight-1.1.2+forge.1cda73c.jar (108 KB) for your game version.
Put it in the mods folder
The folder is inside .minecraft (Windows: %appdata%\.minecraft\mods). If it does not exist, create it.
Launch the loader profile
Open “Mods” in the main menu: Starlight (Forge) should be in the list.
On a server
A server on Forge
The mod only works on a server with the same loader and game version, for example 1.20.1.
File goes into the server’s mods folder
Stop the server, put the mod file into the mods folder and start the server again.
Use the “To server” button
On Millida Hosting, the button at the top of the page uploads the file to your server and restarts it for you.
Minecraft 1.20.1 runs on Java 17: with a different Java version the game may close right after launch.

There are files for 1.18.2–1.20.1, 7 versions in total. The newest is 1.20.1.
Is Starlight (Forge) for Forge or Fabric?
Only for Forge: 1.18.2–1.20.1. There are no files for Fabric or NeoForge: a mod for another loader will not start.
