Nether roof and how to close it off
Playing above the Nether ceiling: why it is a problem, ways to block access, and what to do with what has already been built.
Updated August 13, 2026
Above the Nether's bedrock ceiling there is a flat space. Players use it for fast roads and hidden bases.
Why this is a problem
- Bypassing every trap and defense: the path along the roof is safe.
- Hidden bases that cannot be found.
- Broken travel balance: a road along the roof is 8 times faster than one on the ground.
Ways to close it off
| Method | Comment |
|---|---|
| Height restriction plugin | Teleport down when the player rises above the ceiling |
| Region with entry denied | WorldGuard with a flag on the Y coordinate |
| Datapack or script | Check the player's Y coordinate — Skript |
| Don't close it off | A deliberate decision: on many servers the roof is allowed |
What to do with what's already built
If you decide to close it off after players have already built there: give a week's warning, allow time to move their items, then close it. Tearing it down without a word guarantees a conflict.
Technically
Builds on the roof load the same chunks as regular ones: there is no extra load. The problem is a gameplay one, not a technical one.
In the rules
State the decision plainly: “the Nether roof is allowed/forbidden.” This is one of the first questions technical players ask — Server rules.
