Donations and Mojang rules
What the Minecraft license agreement allows and prohibits regarding server monetization and how this applies in practice.
Updated August 13, 2026
Selling ranks on a server is governed by the EULA and Mojang's commercial rules.
Main restrictions
- You cannot sell the game itself or access to it as a product.
- You cannot present yourself as an official Mojang product: the name and branding must not be misleading.
- Sales of in-game advantage are limited: the rules do not explicitly approve of "pay to win".
- Project names and branding must not use Minecraft trademarks as their own.
How this looks in practice
Most projects sell cosmetics, conveniences and moderate ranks — What to sell. This is both sensible under the rules and good for the server: the game balance stays intact.
Russian specifics
Besides Mojang's rules, there are legal requirements for accepting payments: an offer agreement, receipts, refunds, personal data processing. The payment side, documents and reporting are handled by the payment service — Auto-donate.
Practical tips
- Describe exactly what the player is buying and for how long.
- Do not promise things that depend on third parties (for example, "forever" when the server may shut down).
- Keep records of purchases: in a dispute they settle the matter in a minute.
- Do not sell items that you later take away with a wipe without warning about seasonality — World reset.
