Testing snapshots and new versions
How to test a new game version in advance: snapshots, a test server, what to look at, and when to migrate the project.
Updated August 13, 2026
A new version comes out once every six months. You can prepare in advance.
Why
- Understand what will break in your plugins and server setup.
- Evaluate new mechanics: whether your format needs them.
- Prepare content for the release date.
How
- Test server with a snapshot — Snapshots.
- A copy of the world from production (or a small test world).
- Install your key plugins and see what loads.
What to check
| What | Why |
|---|---|
| World generation changes | Seams at the border between old and new chunks |
| Combat mechanic changes | PvP balance |
| Item data format | Custom items — Custom items |
| Resource pack format | You will have to update the pack — Resource pack |
| Compatibility of key plugins | A list of what you will have to wait for |
When to migrate the project
Not until your key plugins are updated: permissions, regions, anticheat, economy. This usually takes 2–6 weeks after release — Updating the server.
What to tell your players
State your position in advance: “We’ll update a month after release, once the plugins are updated.” This heads off a flood of questions on the release day.
