Knock Knock is an extremely simple mod that allows players to knock on each other's doors. This is mostly intended for multiplayer, but I can definitely see it having utility in a Role Playing situation for Let's Plays or something similar.

Q: I've seen your mod on other sites. Did you post it and are they safe? A: I have not, nor do I plan to, post my mod on any other sites than Curseforge or my GitHub page. If you have downloaded my mod from somewhere else, 1. It isn't from me and 2. It may have some kind of malicious files or have been modified in some way. I urge you to delete the file, run a full virus and malware scan and, if you want to use Knock Knock, come and download it on CurseForge or from GitHub.
Q: Will you backport any features? A: No, but in the case of a game breaking bug, we may port a fix to older versions.

The launcher is free: download it at millida.net/launcher and sign in with any nickname.
Click “Install” on this page
The launcher opens and installs the mod for Minecraft 1.20–1.20.4 on Fabric or Quilt automatically.
Launch the game
A profile with it appears in the launcher: click “Play”.
Manually
Install Fabric or Quilt
The loader must match the game version of the mod file, for example Minecraft 1.20.4. After installing it, a separate profile appears in your launcher.
Download the file for your version
In the version list above, pick the file Knockknock-v2.0.0-1.20.1-Fabric.jar (8 KB) for your game version and loader.
Put it in the mods folder
The folder is inside .minecraft (Windows: %appdata%\.minecraft\mods). If it does not exist, create it.
Launch the loader profile
Open “Mods” in the main menu: Knock Knock should be in the list.
Minecraft 1.20.4 runs on Java 17: with a different Java version the game may close right after launch.

There are files for 1.20.4, 1.20.3, 1.20.2, 1.20.1, 1.20. The newest is 1.20.4.
Is Knock Knock for Forge or Fabric?
There are files for Fabric: 1.20–1.20.4 and for Quilt: 1.20–1.20.4. There are no files for Forge or NeoForge: a mod for another loader will not start.
Which Java does Knock Knock need?
Minecraft 1.20.4 runs on Java 17. If the game closes right after launch, the usual cause is the wrong Java version in the profile settings.
