Since Curios was discontinued on Fabric for 1.17 in favor of the Trinkets API, this mod now uses that.
This 1.17 version also adds a few features / fixes a few bugs which were in the previous version:
- All modded armor should be immediately compatible without any effort from your side
- The items don't show "Slot: Cosmetic Something" anymore
- Heads, skulls and other "head" items (such as carved pumpkins) can now be worn in the cosmetic slot
- Item tags allow you to define items which can't be worn in a cosmetic slot instead of the old "whitelist" tags: data/cosmetic-armor/tags/items/blacklist.json
- A new item tag allows defining items which always show and won't be overriden by an item in the corresponding cosmetic slot: data/cosmetic-armor/tags/items/always_visible.json

By default, only the vanilla armor types are equippable.
You can add modded armor through the tags curios:cosmetic_helmet, curios:cosmetic_chestplate, curios:cosmetic_leggings, and curios:cosmetic_boots.

Install Millida Launcher
The launcher is free: download it at millida.net/launcher and sign in with any nickname.
Click “Install” on this page
The launcher opens and installs the mod for Minecraft 1.18–1.20.1 on Fabric or Quilt automatically, together with its dependencies: Trinkets, Fabric API.
Launch the game
A profile with it appears in the launcher: click “Play”.
Manually
Install Fabric or Quilt
The loader must match the game version of the mod file, for example Minecraft 1.20.1. After installing it, a separate profile appears in your launcher.
Download the file for your version
In the version list above, pick the file CosmeticArmor-1.20-1.6.0.jar (20 KB) for your game version and loader.
Put it in the mods folder
The folder is inside .minecraft (Windows: %appdata%\.minecraft\mods). If it does not exist, create it. Required dependencies go there too: Trinkets, Fabric API.
Launch the loader profile
Open “Mods” in the main menu: Cosmetic Armor should be in the list.
On a server
A server on Fabric or Quilt
The mod only works on a server with the same loader and game version, for example 1.20.1.
File goes into the server’s mods folder
Stop the server, put the mod file into the mods folder and start the server again.
Use the “To server” button
On Millida Hosting, the button at the top of the page uploads the file to your server and restarts it for you.
Minecraft 1.20.1 runs on Java 17: with a different Java version the game may close right after launch.

Is Cosmetic Armor for Forge or Fabric?
There are files for Fabric: 1.18–1.20.1 and for Quilt: 1.19–1.20.1. There are no files for Forge or NeoForge: a mod for another loader will not start.
What does Cosmetic Armor need to work?
Required: Trinkets, Fabric API. Without them the mod will not start: dependencies go into the same mods folder.
Does Cosmetic Armor work on a server?
Yes. Cosmetic Armor works both in singleplayer and on a server.
Which Java does Cosmetic Armor need?
Minecraft 1.20.1 runs on Java 17. If the game closes right after launch, the usual cause is the wrong Java version in the profile settings.
