Starting with version 1.3 you must have Embers Rekindled installed to run Soot.
What is Soot?
Soot is an addon for Embers, to provide some improvements and additions to Embers content, while trying not to offset the feel of Embers too much.
What does Soot contain?
Ember Transmission upgrades/sidegrades The Ember Burst Spreader, which is roughly equivalent to the Ember Ejector, but each of the 5 sides pointing away from the Spreader can be bound to a different receiver.
An Alchemical Globe machine upgrade Can be attached to the Mixer Centrifuge to upgrade it to an alchemy-powered mixer.
Metal Leveling Metals can be transmuted into others (as a one-way process)
Antimony An alchemically synthesized material, whose green sheen can trick Villagers into believing that it's precious emerald.
Brewing Alcohol Alcohol can be brewed and refined and gives unique potion effects.
Machine Upgrades Attachable blocks that provide bonuses to Embers machines.
Scales and Trapdoor Bins To hopefully facilitate easier Alchemy automation.

Install Millida Launcher
The launcher is free: download it at millida.net/launcher and sign in with any nickname.
Click “Install” on this page
The launcher opens and installs the mod for Minecraft 1.12–1.12.2 on Forge automatically.
Launch the game
A profile with it appears in the launcher: click “Play”.
Manually
Install Forge
The loader must match the game version of the mod file, for example Minecraft 1.12.2. After installing it, a separate profile appears in your launcher.
Download the file for your version
In the version list above, pick the file Soot-1.10-hotfix.jar (2.6 MB) for your game version.
Put it in the mods folder
The folder is inside .minecraft (Windows: %appdata%\.minecraft\mods). If it does not exist, create it.
Launch the loader profile
Open “Mods” in the main menu: Soot should be in the list.
Minecraft 1.12.2 runs on Java 8: with a different Java version the game may close right after launch.

FAQ
Which Minecraft versions does Soot work on?
There are files for 1.12.2, 1.12.1, 1.12. The newest is 1.12.2.
Is Soot for Forge or Fabric?
Only for Forge: 1.12.2. There are no files for Fabric or NeoForge: a mod for another loader will not start.
Does Soot need other mods?
The author lists no required dependencies: the Forge loader is enough.
Which Java does Soot need?
Minecraft 1.12.2 runs on Java 8. If the game closes right after launch, the usual cause is the wrong Java version in the profile settings.
