SMWYG Fix
A lightweight, client-side drop-in fix for the Show Me What You Got (SMWYG) mod.
The Problem
The original SMWYG mod can occasionally cause client crashes or server kicks under specific conditions:
- Illegal Characters Kick: When sharing items with certain formatting codes inherited from server-side plugins or other mods, the game may kick you for "Illegal characters in chat".
Features
This mod applies surgical fixes via Mixins to solve these issues without altering original functionality:
- Automatic Sanitization: Strips illegal section signs (§) from item display names before they are sent to the chat field, preventing kicks.
- Bounds Memory: Implements index-aware sanitization to ensure SMWYG's internal character tracking remains accurate.
Installation
- Ensure you have the Fabric Loader installed for 1.20.1.
- Download the smwyg-fix JAR.
- Place it in your .minecraft/mods folder along with the original Show Me What You Got mod.
- Launch the game. No configuration is required.
Compatibility
- Minecraft: 1.20.1
- Fabric Loader: >=0.14.22
- Environment: Client-side only. This mod does not need to be (but can be) installed on a server.

With Millida Launcher
Install Millida Launcher
The launcher is free: download it at millida.net/launcher and sign in with any nickname.
Click “Install” on this page
The launcher opens and installs the mod for Minecraft 1.20.1 on Fabric automatically.
Launch the game
A profile with it appears in the launcher: click “Play”.
Manually
Install Fabric
The loader must match the game version of the mod file, for example Minecraft 1.20.1. After installing it, a separate profile appears in your launcher.
Download the file for your version
In the version list above, pick the file smwyg-fix-1.0.3.jar (345 KB) for your game version.
Put it in the mods folder
The folder is inside .minecraft (Windows: %appdata%\.minecraft\mods). If it does not exist, create it.
Launch the loader profile
Open “Mods” in the main menu: SMWYG-Fix should be in the list.
On a server
A server on Fabric
The mod only works on a server with the same loader and game version, for example 1.20.1.
File goes into the server’s mods folder
Stop the server, put the mod file into the mods folder and start the server again.
Or use the “To hosting” button
On Millida Hosting, the button at the top of the page uploads the file to your server and restarts it for you.
Minecraft 1.20.1 runs on Java 17: with a different Java version the game may close right after launch.
