Crafting FAQ
What is crafting in Minecraft?
Crafting is making items from resources in the crafting grid. Simple 2×2 recipes are available in your inventory, full 3×3 ones at a crafting table. The placement of ingredients in the slots matters: the same set in a different order gives a different item or nothing.
How do I open the 3×3 crafting grid?
Make a crafting table from 4 planks and place it in the world, then use it — the full 3×3 crafting grid opens. Without a crafting table only the 2×2 grid is available in your inventory.
Are recipes different in Java and Bedrock?
Most basic recipes are the same in Java and Bedrock (Pocket Edition). Small differences exist for some items and in new versions — we mention such cases in the recipe notes.
Why won't the item craft?
Most often it is the placement: ingredients must go in the same slots as on the diagram (the shape matters). Also check that the material fits — for example, you can't make a pickaxe from coal, you need stone, iron, gold or diamond.
How to use the crafting guide
Find the item in its category and open its page: it shows where each ingredient goes in the 3×3 crafting grid, what you need to gather and short notes. Place the ingredients on a crafting table in the same slots as the diagram and take the result.

Four-slot recipes work right in your inventory, in the 2×2 grid. Everything else needs a crafting table, made from four planks. The shape matters: the same ingredients in a different order give another item or nothing at all.
The in‑game recipe book fills the grid with an unlocked recipe in one click when all the ingredients are already in your inventory. Potion recipes have their own section.
