About the Satin API mod

Satin is a simple library allowing modders to add interesting graphical effects to their mods. Its main feature is to significantly simplify the use of Minecraft's data-driven shader system (that is, the one used by super secret settings, mob vision, and spectral arrows).

A full feature list with installation instructions is available on the github repository : https://github.com/Ladysnake/Satin/

You can find documentation for the shader format on the wiki : https://github.com/Ladysnake/Satin/wiki/Data-driven-shaders

FAQ

Can it replace Optifine ?

No. Optifine shaders are significantly more complex than what this library allows. For a work-in-progress alternative, see the Canvas Renderer project.

Can it bring back Super Secret Settings ?

Satin is just a library, so it does not add any content by itself. You may however be interested in Secrets No More, a mod using Satin to do exactly that !

Does this library have a Forge version ?

No, and I do not want to port it myself. I will however support anyone who does so. Also note that the documentation for the shader format stays applicable regardless of the mod loader being used.

How to install Satin API

With Millida Launcher

  1. Install Millida Launcher

The launcher is free: download it at millida.net/launcher and sign in with any nickname.

  2. Click “Install” on this page

The launcher opens and installs the mod for Minecraft 1.19.2–1.21.4 on Fabric or Quilt automatically.

  3. Launch the game

A profile with it appears in the launcher: click “Play”.

Manually

  1. Install Fabric or Quilt

The loader must match the game version of the mod file, for example Minecraft 1.21.4. After installing it, a separate profile appears in your launcher.

  2. Download the file for your version

In the version list above, pick the file satin-3.0.0-alpha.1.jar (97 KB) for your game version and loader.

  3. Put it in the mods folder

The folder is inside .minecraft (Windows: %appdata%\.minecraft\mods). If it does not exist, create it.

  4. Launch the loader profile

Open “Mods” in the main menu: Satin API should be in the list.

Satin API works on the player’s side only: there is no need to install it on a server.

Minecraft 1.21.4 runs on Java 21: with a different Java version the game may close right after launch.

FAQ

Which Minecraft versions does Satin API work on?

There are files for 1.19.2–1.21.4, 10 versions in total. The newest is 1.21.4.

Is Satin API for Forge or Fabric?

There are files for Fabric: 1.19.2–1.21.4 and for Quilt: 1.19.2–1.21.4. There are no files for Forge or NeoForge: a mod for another loader will not start.

Does Satin API need other mods?

The author lists no required dependencies: the Fabric or Quilt loader is enough.

Do I need to install Satin API on a server?

No. Satin API works on the player’s side only: there is no need to install it on a server.

Which Java does Satin API need?

Minecraft 1.21.4 runs on Java 21. If the game closes right after launch, the usual cause is the wrong Java version in the profile settings.
